When your baby is born in Japan (出生届)
For you if: you had a baby in Japan, and the baby does not have Japanese nationality.
- File a birth notice (出生届) at the city office within 14 days of birth.
- Apply for the baby's status of residence within 30 days of birth, at an immigration office.
- Also report the birth to your home country's embassy, and get a passport.
Steps
- File the birth notice. Bring the birth certificate (出生証明書).This can be different in each city.
- Get the "certificate of entry items in birth notification" (出生届記載事項証明書) at the city office.
- Apply for the baby's status of residence within 30 days.
- Contact your embassy or consulate about the birth and a passport.
More details
Why 30 days matters. If the baby has no status of residence within 60 days of birth, the baby’s resident record may be deleted. Then the baby may not get services such as health insurance and child allowance.
Who files the birth notice. The mother or the father. File at the city where the baby was born, or where you live.
At the end, check at the counter. You can show this card.
