Earthquake and tsunami (地震・津波 )
For everyone in Japan.
- When it shakes: protect your head. Get under a strong table until the shaking stops.
- Near the sea or a river mouth: after strong or long shaking, go to high ground right away.
- Get official information from TV, radio, or your phone.
Steps
- Protect your head. Stay under a table until it stops.
- When it stops, turn off gas stoves and heaters.
- If you must leave, turn off the circuit breaker (ブレーカー).
- Go to the evacuation shelter your city chose.This can be different in each city.

Prepare now.
- Decide with your family where to go.
- Keep food, water, and a first aid kit for at least 3 days (7 days if possible).
- Fix furniture so it does not fall.
Outside. Protect your head with a bag. Watch for falling signs and glass.
Driving. Pull over to the left and stop the engine. Leave the key. Walk to a safe place.
Tsunami. Do not wait to see the wave. Go to high ground or a tall building. Waves can come many times. Stay away until the warning ends. Red-and-white checkered flags on the beach mean a tsunami warning or advisory.
False information spreads after earthquakes. Check official information.
