Injured or sick because of work (労災)
For you if: you got hurt or sick at work, or on the way to or from work.
- Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance (労災保険) covers injury and illness from work.
- At a designated hospital, treatment is usually free.
- It also covers injury on the way to or from work.
Steps
- Get treatment. Tell the hospital it happened at work.
- Tell your employer.
- If you paid at a non-designated hospital, ask the Labor Standards Inspection Office (労働基準監督署) for a refund.
More details
If you cannot work. Days 1 to 3: your employer pays 60% of your average wage. From day 4: the insurance pays 80%. Your employer’s 60% is only for injury at work, not on the way to or from work.
Your job is protected. Your employer must not dismiss you while you are off work for treatment, and for 30 days after. There are some exceptions. This applies only to injury at work, not on the way to or from work.
Mental illness. Depression from long working hours can also be covered.
At the end, check at the counter. You can show this card.
