First steps after arriving

At your city office

• Register your address (転入届)
  For you if: you have a residence card (在留カード) and you moved into a home in Japan.
• Your Individual Number and My Number Card (マイナンバー)
  For you if: you filed your moving-in notice (転入届).
• Join National Health Insurance (国民健康保険)
  For you if: your period of stay is 3 months or longer, and you have no health insurance from work.
• Join National Pension (国民年金)
  For you if: you are 20 to 59 years old, and you have no pension from work.

After that

• Open a bank account (銀行口座)
  For you if: you need a bank account in Japan, for example for your salary.
• Get a mobile phone (携帯電話)
  For you if: you want a mobile phone contract in Japan.
• Send money abroad (海外送金)
  For you if: you want to send money to your family or others abroad.
• Put out garbage (ごみの出し方)
  For you if: you live in Japan.
